Watches

The first watches appeared after the invention of spring-powered clocks, this made it possible to make smaller and smaller clocks to wear. Other innovations made the watches more precise. While most of the first watches were pocket watches, wristwatches became popular in the end of the 19th century when the military started using them, after the First World War every soldier had a wristwatch. Around 1970 quartz wristwatches came on the market and this made it possible to make cheap accurate watches.

Watches have always been popular among collectors and among popular watches to have or collect are the Omega Speedmaster and watches from brands like Rolex, Breitling, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Patek Phillipe, IWC Schaffhausen and Cartier. While most of these watches are the mechanical wristwatches, quartz watches can be collectible as well, like the Casio G-Shock watches, vintage Seiko watches and Swatch.

What are watches worth?

Watches can be found in every price class, you might find nice old watches for a couple of dollars while a rare watch of a famous brand can be worth millions. Because there are a lot of fake watches that are almost indistinguishable from the real ones, you need to be very experienced when you buy watches for your collection, especially when you find them online. New technologies make it easier for the producers of fake watches to make a watch that looks and feels like the real one and while watches from brands as Rolex, Breitling and Omega are copied the most, all luxury brands are available as fakes.
